[It's been three days. Three wholly blissful days in which she's called in sick and, frankly, they haven't left the bedroom much. Steve's managed to tell her the entire story in bits and pieces, and in the end, she's more surprised that it didn't take three days just for that. But in those moments when the heady rush dies down and the afterglow fades away, Peggy thinks about what he's said. About what he hasn't said. And in the end, it leads her to one simple conclusion: Steve Rogers is wasted on her.
There's nothing in the world she wants more than to be selfish and keep him all to herself. She wants to spend her life with him. But to look at him is to know that he was never meant for white picket fences and slow dances in the living room, as much as she wishes that she could wrap him in that comfortable cocoon forever.
She twines her fingers with his and thinks about her own work. About what he's explained of this time-travelling nonsense (she's still not sure she understands it all). She thinks about a world with more threats and fewer heroes, and she knows what has to be done.]
[ Somewhere deep down, Steve has known that this conversation was coming. If not because she initiated it, it would have been because he would have. Because she’s right, or course. He can’t stay here. As much as Steve wants to, and as much as he believes he’s done, there’s always a nagging sensation he can’t quite get rid of. He’s able to ignore it when they’re both awake, the bliss of being with Peggy making it easy to believe that he can do this. He can just stay here and have the life that he once dreamt of.
But then in the stillness of the night, his thoughts haunt him. He thinks of Sam, and Bucky, and Wanda. He thinks of Clint. He thinks of all the loose ends still pending and, while he knows they’ll do fine without him, he’s not done. He knows he can’t stay here. He knows his time - their time together passed him by a long time ago.
He rests his forehead against hers for a moment, quiet. Just listening to her breathe, as if to remember all this because this bubble they’ve been living in the last few days will be bursting soon as reality starts to filter in. ]
I know. [ He says it quiet, like a confession. ] I thought this would be it. We’d be to be together, and we’d get our second shot.
[If she understands him correctly, he's created a splinter timeline by coming back to her. Which means, in turn, that if she goes back with him, they'll create another branching timeline, and so on and so forth, into infinity. Somewhere, there'll be a world (several worlds) without Peggy Carter leading SHIELD, but she has faith that Howard can handle it on his own. If he knew, he would understand.]
[ Steve savors that kiss, holds her a little tighter as if somehow willing the moment to last forever. He knows it can't - he's messing with time as it is already.
At her words, he frowns slightly in confusion. Hopeful confusion, because the we will be is something he can't help but latch on. He hasn't contemplated the possibility of her going back with him, mainly because he feels cruel even thinking about asking her to do that. She has a home here, after all. ]
[And what would they do if he remained here? He couldn't live with her openly; he'd have to ignore every wrong in the world that his impulses would tell him to right. She can't ask him to go against who he is like that, not when that's part of what she loves about him. So he has to return home, and she has no intention of losing him again.
She'd never thought she'd be the sort of woman to give up her life for a man - in fact, she'd done just the opposite during the war. But if there are battles for Steve to fight in the future, then it follows that there must be a use for her, as well. Certainly not as anything as outlandish as an Avenger, but Peggy knows her worth, and it can't possibly be diminished by time.]

You have to go back, Steve.

Oh, we will be. Just not in the way you wanted.

What do you mean?
